I dragged her into my office so violently that her heels skidded, her body jerking forward, and I felt that small, sharp jolt in my chest as she gasped, struggling to catch her balance.

Her voice came out in a hiss, as though I had physically wounded her. “Let go of me! You’re hurting me!” Her nails sank into my wrist, but I didn’t give a damn.

I slammed the door shut behind us, the click of the lock slicing through the silence like a threat, sealing us in, and God, sealing her in with me.
