The party was already too loud by the time I pushed through the glass doors of the bar. Music pulsed under my feet, voices overlapped, and the air carried the expensive mix of perfume, whiskey, and money.
I only came because my roommate insisted I needed one night that did not involve spreadsheets or client calls. I told myself I would stay for an hour, drink one glass of something strong, and leave before anyone noticed I was out of place.
