The footsteps stayed outside my door for a long time. I didn’t move my hand. He never opened it. Eventually the floorboards creaked and his bedroom door shut. I finished myself standing there in the dark hallway, quiet and angry, then went to bed without another sound.

The deadline was the next night and the board wanted the final contract package by morning. No more extensions.
