I looked at Alexis and I was worried. She looked troubled and I wanted to help her. But I knew she was fiercely independent and she valued her privacy. I didn’t want to push her too hard and make her withdraw further.

I tried to reason with myself. Maybe she was just stressed about Megan’s disappearance. After all, this situation has taken a toll on all of us.

But I couldn’t shake the feeling that something else was going on. I could sense it in her eyes and in the way her heart was racing.
