Kaedryn’s small fingers were knotted into the collar of my vest so tightly like letting go would send him back into the dark. 

He was incredibly light against my chest, a small, shivering bundle. I kept my arm hooked firmly under his legs, anchoring him against me as I stood up from the broken edge of the pit.

Around us, the dark was still filled with the wet crunch of blades meeting flesh. Kael and the enforcers were ruthlessly putting down the rest of the rogue creatures, their lanterns cutting rough paths through the shadows.
