Unfortunately, my response was bound to disappoint them. I sneered and said nonchalantly:
“Why are you in such a rush? She’s not dead, just had a miscarriage.”
The silence that followed on the other end of the line was palpable. Soon, even my usually calm father lost his composure. He erupted:
“What are you saying? She’s your sister! Don’t you have any conscience?”
I didn’t hide my cold laugh this time. I raised my voice in rebuttal:
“You only remember she’s my sister now? From childhood, I’ve always been the one helping her. What has she ever done for me?”
“Why should I simply give up everything I’ve worked for?”...
