Chapter 5 : At Java

Chapter 5 : At Java

When we arrived in Java, the delightful aroma of coffee beans floated through the air. I close my eyes subconsciously to take in the scent. This location smells like bliss. David and I approach the counter, and as we wait for the staff, who is probably in the back of the business, he tells me that his partner and a buddy are sitting on the opposite side of the coffee shop.

I tilt my head toward the direction David is pointing, and my gaze falls on the most handsome man I've ever seen. He has silky black hair--or perhaps dark brown. And his eyes! They're these two stunning blue Chris orbs that I could stare at for hours. Is that weird? And don't get me started on his physique. He's seated, but I can already tell he's built like a truck. His arms are really muscular and likely larger than my thighs. He has biceps, triceps, and all the 'ceps'!

And now this man, whose name I don't know, is staring at me with a level of intensity I've never felt before. I blush and glance down at the ground, discovering my shoes to be incredibly interesting. Oh, see! My right shoe has a little dirt on it. I should probably clean it when I get home.

David interrupts my thoughts by tapping my arm. "Hmm?" I say as I lift my head to see what he wants. He chuckles and asks, "Are you going to order?" This is when I noticed an employee emerge from the back of the store. I turn to see James, a guy I went to high school with and trained a few months ago. "Thea! It's wonderful to see you again! How is school going for you? I miss having shifts with you," James adds with that pretty boy smirk that generally works on girls, but I find myself in the desire for a guy rather than a boy right now. Oh, my God! Where do these notions come from?

"Hi, James!" School is fine. "How are you?" I inquire, avoiding the statement about missing me. "I am doing fantastic! Just had football tryouts, so maybe I'll make the team." I remember James playing football in high school. I never went to any games; I was the girl who stayed at home to study or at least used studying to justify being antisocial. I'm still shy, but I'm attempting to move out of my comfort zone.

"Yeah, I hope you do," I answer, not sure what to say in this situation. I barely know the guy, but he's struck up a discussion with me. I assume he is simply trying to be kind. "Can I get a vanilla latte for myself and a caramel macchiato for him?" I motion towards David. "Ooh! Also, do you have any blueberry scones? I ask, biting my lip with trepidation. "Oh, we do not have any made right now. "I can start a batch right away," James explains.

I look behind me and notice a line beginning to form. "No, that's OK. We will just take the beverages. "How much?" I ask.

"On the house," says James, smiling at me. I'm about to inform James that he's not supposed to do that at Java when I hear a deep growl echoing throughout the room. I jump and swivel my head towards the sound. Instead of a grizzly bear in the room, I see an incredibly grumpy... I don't even know his name, but he's a very gorgeous guy who I'm hoping isn't David's boyfriend. Across from Grumpy, there's another guy with golden blonde hair and brown eyes who is much the same size and appearance as him. I didn't even notice him when I first entered.

"What the heck was that?" I ask David, concerned by the noise. "Uh, it was just a motorcycle passing by or something," he adds to me. That did not sound like a motorcycle, but I suppose it must be. I don't see any animals around here. "C'mon Thee, let's go sit down."

David gets the coffee and walks me to the table where the other guys had already sat. I laugh at what David just said because Evie always calls me that. They would probably get along well. They both behave like six-year-olds.

As we approach closer to the table, I become more worried. This is what happens when I don't go out at all in high school and am forced into social situations. What happens if I don't know what to say? What if they dislike me or think I'm weird? And now I understand that since the two guys are sitting across from each other, I'll have to sit next to one of them rather than David. This only serves to calm my nerves.

As we approach, they both rise to greet us and holy mother of God, they are so tall! Blondie must be approximately 6'2" and Grumpy around 6'4", while I am only 5'2". I had to tilt my head forward to see into their eyes. David hugs and kisses Blondie--quite provocatively, I should add. I smile a little, thankful that David is with Blondie rather than Grumpy.

I look over at Grumpy, who is smirking at me as if he understands what I'm thinking. I broaden my eyes and look down, preoccupied with my coffee. I grab it and take the seat next to Grumpy, while the other two sit across from us.

"This is Thea, my Psychology friend. "Thea, this is my boyfriend, William," David says, gesturing at Blondie. "And that," David continues, indicating at Grumpy, "is Christopher."

"It's nice to meet you, Thea," Christopher says. His voice is deep and smooth, and it completely complements his appearance. It makes my breath catch, and as he extends his hand to me, I slip my small hand into his enormous, calloused one. Sparks. That's all I can say to describe the sensation of my hand in his. A succession of tingles traveled down my arm and over my body, ending somewhere I was too embarrassed to mention.

I swallow loudly, clear my throat, and respond quickly to hide my nervousness. "Same to you Christopher." I wanted to utter his name and see how it rolled off my tongue. I love it. We continue to stare at each other until David exclaims, "So, it appears you two are off to a good start."

His words brought me back to reality, and I swiftly removed my hand from Christopher's clasp, almost as if he had burned me. Christopher glares at David and says something under his breath that sounds like 'I'm going to murder you.'

I tried hard not to giggle, but it crept out, and Christopher gave me a look I can't describe. Maybe he was astonished that I thought his behaviors were funny. I'm not sure; I'm not particularly adept at reading people. I felt a hand on my shoulder just as Christopher appeared to be ready to ask me a question. I turn to see James holding a dish of blueberry scones. They smell fantastic, and there's steam pouring off the top, so I'm guessing he just made them.

"For you," James adds, staring straight at me. His hand is still on my shoulder, which makes me uncomfortable, and I feel myself leaning towards Christopher. I whisper "Thanks" to James. I avoid eye contact in the hopes that he will leave, but he asks if there is anything he can do for me--and I realize he isn't just talking about being our server.

"I would remove your hand from Thea before I had to do it for you," Christopher warns. James instantly withdraws his hand in fear of Christopher. I'd be afraid too if Christopher stared at me with his jaw and fingers clinched as if he was about to pummel me. James mumbles something about seeing me later, then returns to the counter.

With one look at Christopher, I notice that he is still glaring at James with hatred and rage. I don't understand why he's so angry. We had just met, and James did nothing to me. He may have made me feel uncomfortable, but his hand was merely on my shoulder!

Christopher appears to be breathing heavily, and if he clenches his jaw any tighter, he will break it. I'm not sure why, but I put my palm on his and give him a bashful grin, hoping it will calm him down. Surprisingly, it appears to work, and Christopher looks at me with an intensity I've never seen before.

I take my hand away when I realize David and William have just witnessed the entire thing. David smirks at me, while William smiles softly. I'm humiliated, so I cover my face with my hair as I glance down. Two fingers on my chin bring my face back towards Christopher, and his other hand pulls my hair behind my ear. "Do not hide from me, Thea. And you look incredibly adorable when you flush," Christopher remarks, forcing me to blush even more if that is possible. He laughs at my unintentional answer and then releases me. I hurriedly grab my coffee and drink half of it to give myself something to do.

"What is with you guys and embarrassing me?" I say, half joking and partly serious.

"What do you mean?" Christopher inquires with honest interest. I stare at David, who starts laughing like the terrible villain in a movie. Christopher glares at David and leans forward. "What the fuck did you do to her?" he asks, growling.

"Calm down, Chris," William urges. That's when I realized it was the first time I'd heard William talk. He must be a man with few words. Given who he is dating, I suppose that makes sense. Opposites attract.

"I didn't do that much," David says, chuckling. "Really?" I inquire, mouth agape. He must be joking with me! "You convinced everyone in that class that I had attacked you and refused to stop shouting! Then, in the middle of the presentation, you hurled twenty pens at me, and everyone looked at me again! They undoubtedly think I am mad!" I yelled. After finishing my mini-rant, I turned to William. "How do you deal with him?"

William's smile widened as he turned to face David. "You get used to it," he remarked before kissing David's temple. David curls into William's side and wraps his arms around him. "You love me."

"Yeah, I do."
