The hunting season has just begun. All the alphas of the pack are giving out orders on how it will take place well except for that of the alpha of the white-skinned Lycan, the flawless; Ava.
Ava has just turned 17 this summer and she has been going through intense training. Her uncle Luke, the beta (second in command) sees to it that she gets the standard and best lessons that would help her become the strongest female alpha.
It has always been an open secret since the death of Marcel, the different clans in the flawless pack and other packs, have wondered who will lead them when it will be the turn of the youngest to not only have their transitioning but for the heirs to different packs to take heir rightful place as the alpha.
Now, not that there was a rule or something that looks like it, that says females couldn’t lead a pack but having a female alpha was like a once in a blue moon phenomenon. In the history of lycanthropy, there have been only 2 female alphas, and that was 300 years ago. In the flawless clan, there has never been an Alpha female. From a young age, some lycans opposed the idea of Ava becoming the new Alpha and it was none other than Gamma of the flawless, Marcus. This development always worried Luke, Ava's uncle.
That was why he was relentless in making Ava become the best amongst other alpha heirs, whether girl or boy since she was the second girl heir alpha.
As Ava made her bed, to get ready for school, she wouldn’t stop thinking about her future as the alpha. Whenever she tried to complain, her uncle would cheer her up but he would always say to her “Ava uneasy lies the head that wears the crown, you were picked for this role not because you are pureblood or because you are Marcel’s daughter but because you are perfect fit for this. The universe saw something in you that he didn’t see in the others”. His words were like ice to her troubled heart.
On the other hand was her mother Mariah. Her mother was somewhat a blessing and a curse to her. Mariah never stopped mourning the death of Marcel. Right upon until this day, Mariah still misses her husband. So she did the next thing, that people who were hurt would normally do. She was super protective of her daughter. She defended her in front of the elders of the Lycans. Pushed her to do her best but there was something she never allowed Ava to do; watch a transitioning ceremony
No matter the number of times, Luke tried to convince Mariah to let Ava attend one, she was adamant and headstrong. Transaction ceremonies were attended by alphas, second in commands and alpha heirs. This ceremony was more of a death trap and less of a course for learning by the young alphas.
During this ceremony, the young werewolves transitioned into themselves. At the moment, the young ones didn’t know a thing about being a werewolf. They didn’t know how to focus on who to attack or not. And if they had to transition on their own, they could risk Killing a being that was not of their kind or does not look like them. For lycans that are yet to transition, they always came with lots of their family members and members of their pack, to protect them, in case they were attacked. Heir alphas who were not liked were wanted dead. And if they came alone or with little or no protection were chased and hunted. If caught, they are instantly killed. And nothing could be done about it. Hence the protective nature of Mariah on her daughter but one had serious trouble transitioning if they didn’t attend at least two times.
On the last transitioning ceremony, Luke begged Mariah to allow Ava but still, she didn’t budge. Lycans were already talking. When Mariah saw that Marcus the gamma, who wanted to show the other flawless that his son was a better match for the alpha than Ava, brought his son for the ceremony. Mariah started to have a rethink. The elders could consider him if Ava failed her transitioning. Mariah decided that on the next one, Ava will be in attendance. Luke didn’t say anything when he saw Marcus’s son. Whenever Mariah talks about it, he had a smirk on his face that obviously said: “ I told you so”.
Now on a normal day, Ava was a beauty to behold. She had the body shape of a Coca-Cola bottle. Whenever she walked her hips swayed to an unheard song, she walked in calculated steps a born stepper. Her hair was the color of dark chocolates which somewhat made it hard for one to know if she had black hair or she was a brunette. Her eyes which were coffee brown danced with a glint of coolness but were wary. Due to the way she was brought up, she grew up somewhat paranoid. She had a nose that could make girls want a nose surgery as her pouty lips made her have a bitch face when she was pissed and made her look cute as a rabbit when she smiled. She had full succulent lips begging for nothing but to be kissed. Indeed Ava was a breathing Mona Lisa.
As Ava slung on her school bag, she put off the lights and headed for her car. She punched her mother’s number, while mentally reminding herself that the transition ceremony will take place in two days. Also mentally tells herself to be strong because the coming days will be tough ones.
She stepped on the gas and sped to school. At school, she increased her pace to be able to meet up with English. And she did. The class was usually boring to her these days since she had the transitioning thingy occupying her mind. As the class progressed, she found out that there was a new boy in her class and he had his eyes on her all. the. Time. This didn’t sit well as she kept turning her neck to catch him staring at her. And he was unapologetic about it. After class, she rushed out of class and suddenly bumped into her two best friends. Hallie and Celia.
“whoa! Whoa! Slow down Av, what’s wrong” Hallie griped Ava by the shoulders.
“ Av did you see a ghost,”, Celia says picking up her books.
“Guys there was a guy in class today that wouldn’t stop staring at me–* whispering* maybe Marcus sent him to spy on me,” Ava said looking over her shoulder.
“ Calm down Ava, your paranoia is at it again/ Don’t be ridiculous” Hallie and Celia say in unison.
Ava didn’t get to reply because the Bell for the next class rings and the principal is standing at the end of the hall, looking sternly. Detention loading.
Ava said a silent bye and walked to her next class. It was biology. As she took her seat beside her partner. She said a quick hi while scanning the class for that boy. At that moment, her neck had a resemblance to that of a giraffe’s. Her eyes didn’t leave the door as she kept peering into the face of the students who walked into class. At last three teachers came in and the class began.
After school Ava didn’t wait for her friends, she sped off again, going home. Just like her mother had advised her whenever somethings became fishy. When she got home, she locked herself in and made a call to her mother, telling her she was home early. While waiting for her mother to get home, she dozed off. On opening her eyes, she saw most of the pack members surround her while her mother was sitter beside her and her uncle was at the door.
“ Hey baby, I got here as soon as I could, are you hurt? Do I send some of our members to the school?” Mariah said while rubbing Ava's back.
“ Mariah stop overreacting, this might just be a boy in school who is admiring Ava, Av tell your Mom she’s overreacting,” Luke said hands folded while staring at Ava.
“Mum calm down, maybe uncle Luke is right, maybe he’s just an ordinary admirer,” Ava said while giving her mother a quick but shuddering deep down as she remembered how that guy stared at her nonstop. It was super creepy.
Her mother looked into her eyes to look for that assurance, she always saw when there was a problem and found it, because Ava has practiced how to perfect that look. Slowly but quietly the other pack members, left her room though they kept asking her if everything was alright but with their eyes.
Immediately everybody left, Ava sprinted to the bathroom. She couldn’t use the bathroom with just so many eyes on her because some female pack members would suggest following her to the bathroom. As she left her room to get a glass of juice, she could hear voices from the room far across hers. She steadied herself and finally could make out what they were saying.
“ See Ava has to attend the TC, there will be no buts. You have made that girl so scared, look out how we all came running to her for just a minor thing”
“ I just can’t allow my daughter to get into danger knowing fully well that Marcus and his son are after her life”
“ Then you risk having a weak alpha and you and I know that if Ava does something stupid at her transitioning, she would lose her position. Mariah, Ava is going and that is the final”
The next thing Ava hears is the slamming of a door and she rushes downstairs.
