Chapter 4 Four

Chapter 4 Four

"And then, the brave knight raised his sword and vanquished the fearsome dragon!" Sophia would exclaim, her eyes alight with excitement as Ethan gazed up at her, enraptured.

"Wow!" the young boy would breathe, his eyes wide with wonder. "The knight was so brave!"

Sophia would chuckle, ruffling Ethan's tousled locks affectionately. "Indeed he was, my little one. But you know what makes a true hero?"

Ethan would shake his head, his expression one of rapt attention.

"A true hero is someone who protects those they love, no matter the cost," Sophia would explain, her voice taking on a solemn tone. "They put the needs of others before their own and never give up, even in the face of overwhelming odds."

As the words left her lips, Sophia couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt. For while she had built a new life for herself and Ethan, a life filled with love and laughter, she knew that she had not been entirely truthful with her son.

There was a part of her past, a dark shadow that loomed over her dreams of a peaceful future, that she had yet to reveal to him. A shadow named Lily, whose reach and malice knew no bounds.

But Sophia pushed those thoughts aside, determined not to let the specter of her past taint the joy and innocence of their present. Ethan was her world, her reason for living, and she would do whatever it took to protect the life they had built together.

"Come now, little one," she would say, scooping Ethan into her arms and peppering his face with kisses, eliciting peals of delighted laughter. "It's time for bed."

As Ethan grew from a rambunctious toddler into a precocious young boy, Sophia's skills as a healer continued to flourish. Her reputation spread far and wide, and soon, she found herself tending to patients from neighboring villages, her remedies and treatments sought after for their efficacy.

It was on one such day, as Sophia was preparing a tincture for a fever-stricken child, that the fragile peace of their existence was shattered.

"Mama, look!" Ethan's voice rang out from the front room, laced with excitement. "Visitors!"

Sophia's heart skipped a beat as she emerged from her workroom, her eyes widening at the sight of two strangers standing in the doorway – a man and a woman, both cloaked and hooded, their faces obscured.

"Greetings," the man spoke, his voice a low rumble. "We seek the healer known as Sophia Rivers."

A chill ran down Sophia's spine at the sound of her name, a name she had not uttered in years. Instinctively, she stepped in front of Ethan, shielding him from the strangers' view.

"I am she," she replied, her voice steady despite the fear that coursed through her veins. "What is your business here?"

The woman threw back her hood, revealing a face that Sophia would never forget – sharp, angular features, eyes as cold as ice.

Lily.

"Hello, dear sister," Lily purred, her lips curling into a cruel smile. "It's been far too long."

Sophia's breath caught in her throat, her heart pounding against her ribcage. How had Lily found them? After all these years of hiding, of building a new life, how had her past finally caught up to her?

"You..." she whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of fear and rage. "How dare you show your face here?"

Lily's laughter was like nails on a chalkboard, grating and cruel. "Oh, Sophia, you always were a fool. Did you really think you could escape me forever?"

As Lily advanced, Sophia instinctively backed away, her arm reaching behind her to keep Ethan safely shielded.

"Stay away from us," she warned, her voice low and dangerous.

But Lily paid her no heed, her eyes glinting with malicious intent. "I've come to collect what's rightfully mine," she hissed. "That child you carry, the spawn of my beloved Asher – he belongs to me."

Sophia's blood ran cold as the realization hit her like a physical blow. Lily knew. Somehow, she had discovered the truth about Ethan's paternity, and now she was here to take him away.

Over her dead body.

"You'll never touch him," Sophia snarled, her protective instincts kicking into high gear. "I won't let you harm my son."

Lily's laughter was like a knife twisting in Sophia's gut. "Your son?" she mocked. "How precious. But he's not yours, Sophia. He's the heir to the pack, the son of the true Alpha King. And I'll be damned if I let a worthless servant like you keep him from his rightful place."

As Lily made a move towards them, Sophia reacted on pure instinct. Grabbing the nearest object – a heavy ceramic vase – she hurled it at Lily with all her might.

The vase shattered against the wall, narrowly missing Lily's head, but the impact was enough to send her staggering backwards.

"Run, Ethan!" Sophia screamed, her voice thick with desperation. "Run and don't look back!"

The young boy, his eyes wide with fear, obeyed without hesitation, his small form disappearing out the back door and into the forest beyond.

Lily's enraged howl echoed through the cottage as she regained her footing, her eyes blazing with fury. "You'll pay for that, you insolent wench!"

But Sophia was already moving, her mind focused on one thing and one thing only – getting to Ethan and ensuring his safety.

With a burst of speed fueled by pure adrenaline, she raced out the back door and into the forest, her heart pounding in her ears as she scanned the surrounding foliage for any sign of her son.

"Ethan!" she called, her voice strained with panic. "Ethan, where are you?"

A rustle in the underbrush caught her attention, and she whirled around, her muscles tensed for battle.

But it wasn't Lily who emerged from the shadows – it was Ethan, his eyes wide and brimming with tears.

"Mama..." he whimpered, his small body trembling with fear.

Sophia didn't hesitate. She scooped him into her arms, cradling him close as she pressed a desperate kiss to his brow.

"Shhh, my love, it's alright," she soothed, her voice thick with unshed tears. "Mama's here. I won't let anyone hurt you, I promise."

But even as the words left her lips, she knew the danger was far from over. Lily was relentless, and she would stop at nothing to claim what she believed was rightfully hers.

They had to keep moving, to put as much distance between themselves and that madwoman as possible.

Each night, as they huddled beneath the shelter of twisted roots or fallen branches, Sophia would hold Ethan close, his small body trembling against hers as she struggled to soothe his fears.

"Why are we running, Mama?" he would ask, his voice small and laced with confusion. "What did we do wrong?"

Sophia's heart would clench at the innocent question, her mind awash with memories of the life they had once known – a life of peace and security, now shattered by Lily's malicious pursuit.

"We're not running because we did anything wrong, my love," she would explain, her voice thick with emotion. "We're running to stay safe, to protect ourselves from someone who wishes us harm."

Ethan's brow would furrow, his eyes wide and trusting as he gazed up at her. "But why would anyone want to hurt us, Mama? We've never done anything bad."

A lump would form in Sophia's throat as she struggled to find the words to explain the complex web of lies and betrayal that had led them to this moment. How could she make a child understand the depths of Lily's hatred, the twisted ambition that drove her to hunt them so relentlessly?

"Some people are just... lost, Ethan," she would finally say, her fingers gently stroking his tousled locks. "They're blinded by their own desires and cannot see the pain they cause others. But we must be strong, my love. We must keep moving, keep fighting, until we find a place where we can truly be safe."

Ethan would nod solemnly, his small hand finding hers and giving it a reassuring squeeze. "Don't worry, Mama. I'll be brave, just like the knights in your stories. I'll protect you."

A bittersweet smile would tug at Sophia's lips as she pulled her son closer, her heart swelling with a mixture of pride and sorrow. He was far too young to bear such burdens, to understand the true weight of the danger they faced.

But she would be strong for him, a pillar of unwavering strength and determination. She would not let Lily's hatred rob him of his innocence, not while she still drew breath.

Their days blurred together, a constant cycle of fleeing and hiding, of snatching what little rest they could before moving on once more. Sophia's every sense was heightened, attuned to the slightest sound or movement that could signal Lily's approach.

It was on one such night, as they huddled in the hollow of a ancient oak, that Sophia's worst fears were realized.

A twig snapped in the distance, the sound cutting through the stillness like a knife. Sophia's head whipped around, her eyes scanning the shadows for any sign of movement.

There, just beyond the tree line, she caught a glimpse of a hooded figure, their movements deliberate and predatory.

Lily.

Sophia's breath caught in her throat as she tightened her grip on Ethan, her heart pounding in her ears. They had been found, their desperate flight for freedom cut short by the very woman who had set them on this path.

"Ethan," she whispered, her voice strained with urgency. "We have to move, now."

But before they could make their escape, a chilling voice rang out, shattering the silence of the night.

"Running again, dear sister?" Lily's mocking tones echoed through the trees, sending shivers down Sophia's spine. "When will you learn that you cannot hide from me?"

Ethan whimpered, his small body trembling against Sophia's as she pressed him closer, shielding him with her own form.

"Stay back, Lily," she warned, her voice low and dangerous. "I won't let you harm my son."

Lily's cruel laughter seemed to surround them, emanating from every shadow and crevice. "Your son? Don't be foolish, Sophia. That child is the heir to the pack, the son of the true Alpha King. And I'll be damned if I let a worthless servant like you keep him from his rightful destiny."

As Lily stepped into view, her features twisted into a grotesque sneer, Sophia felt a surge of protective fury coursing through her veins.

"Over my dead body," she snarled, her fingers curling into fists at her sides.

Lily's eyes narrowed, her lips curling into a cruel smile. "That can be arranged."

In a flash, Lily lunged forward, her movements lightning-quick and deadly. Sophia reacted on pure instinct, shoving Ethan behind her as she braced herself for the attack.

The impact was brutal, Lily's body slamming into hers with the force of a freight train. They grappled and wrestled, each woman fighting with a ferocity born of desperation and maternal instinct.

Blows were traded, blood spilled, but still Sophia refused to relent. She could not – would not – let Lily win, not when her son's life hung in the balance.

Through the haze of combat, she caught glimpses of Ethan, huddled in the shadows, his eyes wide with terror as he witnessed the brutal fight unfold.

"Run, Ethan!" she screamed, her voice barely audible over the sound of their clashing. "Run and don't look back!"

For a moment, the young boy remained frozen, his gaze locked on his mother's as if willing her to victory.

Then, with a trembling nod, he turned and fled, his small form disappearing into the darkness of the forest.

Sophia felt a surge of relief, tempered by the knowledge that she had to end this battle quickly, before Lily could give chase.

With a burst of strength born of pure desperation, she landed a savage blow to Lily's midsection, sending her staggering backwards.

"This isn't over, Sophia," Lily wheezed, her eyes blazing with fury. "I'll hunt you to the ends of the earth if I have to. That child is mine, and I'll stop at nothing to claim him."

Sophia's lips curled into a snarl, her body trembling with exertion and rage. "Then you'll be hunting forever, Lily. Because I'll die before I let you lay a single finger on my son."
