The days that followed were a constant battle for Sophia.
"Well, well, if it isn't the palace's resident maid," Lily would taunt, her eyes narrowing with disdain. "Tell me, Sophia, how does it feel to be nothing more than a servant in your own home?"
Sophia bit her tongue, her hands instinctively resting on her stomach, a silent reminder of the precious life she carried within.
"Cat got your tongue?" Lily sneered. "Or perhaps you're simply too stupid to come up with a witty retort."
Gritting her teeth, Sophia fought back the urge to lash out. She knew better than to engage with Lily's taunts, for doing so would only give her foster sister more ammunition.
Instead, she focused on her duties, scrubbing floors, washing linens, and tending to the palace's every need. It was a far cry from the life she had once envisioned, but she refused to let Lily's cruelty break her spirit.
As the weeks passed, Sophia's pregnancy became more evident, her once-flat stomach rounding with the life growing inside her. She took solace in the gentle kicks and flutters, a constant reminder that she was not alone in her struggles.
"Don't worry, little one," she would whisper, her hands cradling her swollen belly. "Mama will keep you safe, no matter what."
Yet, even as she found strength in her child, the world around her seemed to be closing in. Lily's taunts grew more vicious, her eyes gleaming with malice whenever she caught sight of Sophia's burgeoning bump.
"Well, well, it seems our little maid has been busy," Lily drawled one day, her gaze fixed on Sophia's stomach. "Tell me, whose bastard child are you carrying?"
Sophia's blood ran cold, her heart pounding in her chest. She knew the truth, but she dared not speak it aloud, for fear of the consequences.
"No one's," she lied, her voice barely above a whisper. "It's just me."
Lily's cruel laughter echoed through the halls, sending shivers down Sophia's spine. "Oh, Sophia, you were never a good liar."
Before Sophia could react, Lily's hand shot out, gripping her arm in a vice-like grip. "If you know what's good for you, you'll get rid of that thing before it's too late."
Sophia's heart pounded in her ears, her free hand instinctively cradling her stomach. "I won't," she whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of fear and determination.
Lily's eyes narrowed, her grip tightening. "Then you'll pay the price, dear sister. Mark my words."
With a final shove, Lily released her grip, leaving Sophia to stumble backward, her heart racing and her mind reeling from the veiled threat.
As Lily disappeared down the corridor, Sophia slumped against the wall, tears streaming down her cheeks. She knew in that moment that her life, and the life of her unborn child, hung in the balance.
She had to escape, to find a safe haven where Lily's reach could not touch them. But how? And where would she go?
Every waking moment was spent meticulously crafting her escape, weighing the risks and potential consequences of each decision.
At night, she would lie awake, her hand resting protectively on her swollen belly as she mapped out her route, her mind racing with contingency plans should her initial path prove too perilous.
"We'll make it, little one," she would whisper into the darkness, her voice barely audible. "I promise, I'll get us to safety."
Yet, even as she plotted her escape, Sophia couldn't shake the lingering fear that plagued her thoughts. What if Lily discovered her plans? What if she caught wind of Sophia's intentions and took drastic measures to stop her?
The mere thought sent shivers down her spine, and she found herself constantly looking over her shoulder, her senses heightened to the smallest of sounds or movements.
On more than one occasion, she caught Lily's piercing gaze fixed upon her, those cold, calculating eyes seeming to bore into her very soul. It was in those moments that Sophia felt the weight of her decision most acutely, the realization that she was risking everything for a chance at freedom.
Still, she pressed on, her determination fueled by the gentle flutters of her unborn child, a constant reminder of what she stood to lose if she failed.
As the days ticked by, Sophia meticulously gathered the supplies she would need for her journey – a few meager belongings, a small stash of food, and a precious heirloom that had belonged to her mother, a talisman she hoped would protect her and her child.
Finally, the night of her escape arrived, the moon casting an eerie glow over the palace grounds. Sophia moved with practiced stealth, her heart pounding in her chest as she slipped through the shadows, her bundle of belongings clutched tightly to her chest.
Just as she neared the palace gates, a voice rang out, shattering the silence like a thunderclap.
"Going somewhere, dear sister?"
Sophia froze, her blood running cold as she turned to face the last person she wanted to see – Lily, her eyes gleaming with malicious glee.
"Did you really think you could escape so easily?" Lily taunted, her voice dripping with venom. "You're carrying the Alpha's child, and you'll never be free of me."
Sophia's grip tightened on her bundle, her body instinctively shielding her unborn child. "Stay away from us, Lily," she warned, her voice trembling with a mixture of fear and resolve.
Lily's cruel laughter filled the night air, sending chills down Sophia's spine. "Or what? You'll beg for mercy? We both know you're too weak to stop me."
As Lily advanced, Sophia's mind raced, her eyes darting around for any means of escape. She couldn't let Lily win, not this time.
In a split-second decision, Sophia turned and ran, her feet pounding against the earth as she fled into the darkness. Behind her, she could hear Lily's enraged cries, but she didn't dare look back.
She ran and ran, her lungs burning and her legs aching, but still she pressed on, driven by the instinctive need to protect her child at all costs.
Finally, when she could run no more, Sophia collapsed beneath the shelter of a ancient oak tree, her chest heaving as she fought to catch her breath.
As the adrenaline faded, she became acutely aware of the gentle flutters within her womb, a constant reminder of the precious life she carried.
"We made it, little one," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "We're safe, for now."
