"Mom? Come on; open the door." I said as I tried to open it but it was locked from the inside. "Mom, I am worried now."
"Ami, it's okay," She said. I could tell that she was coming towards the door as her voice was getting nearer. "I just dropped something."
She opened the door and I saw her in her usual clothes and blow-dried hair. There wasn't anything unusual with her so I furrowed my brows. "What happened? I heard something; what was it?"
"Oh no, it was just my mini mirror. I dropped when I was putting some lipstick on." She said as she turned her back on me and walked to her vanity mirror.
"Then why didn't you answer me right away? I was scared that something might have happened to you." I said.
"I was trying to clean up the mess so I didn't have the time to answer you immediately but you were banging on the door so I decided to open up." She said.
"I was just worried, okay? I thought you fell or something." I said.
"That's what happened when you drink an excessive amount of coffee; you get nervous easily." Mom said. "Go now dear, I need to finish cleaning this up. I'll be out in a few; don't worry you won't be late for work, I'll make sure of that."
"Alright Mom," I said and turned to the door. I was about to go out when I remembered something. I turned to her again and said, "Mom, for the record, I love coffee." I winked at her and she shook her head. She has always told me to lessen my coffee intake but I couldn't do as he says. I love coffee and it felt like it is already a part of my daily routine.
"I know, I know," She said as she motioned for me to go out already. I opened the door and went out with a smile; I thought something bad happened and I felt relieved.
I went to my room and get my things for work. I decided to wait for Mom on the couch in the receiving area while browsing through my phone. I checked in my social media accounts and saw some photos of my friends, colleague, and even my co-workers at the fast food. I was about to return my phone to my bag when it rang and I saw Jazree's name on the screen.
"Hey," I greeted her as soon as I pressed the green button. "Morning,"
"Good morning to you too," She said.
"What's up?" I said.
"Nothing," She said. "What are you doing?"
"About to get to work, why? How about you?" I said.
"I am already at the hospital." She said. My best friend, Jazree, is a registered nurse and is currently working at a public hospital in the city. "I just want to know if you knew about the newly opened café near your workplace. I want to try it."
"What café? Is it the one named after an anime character?" I said remembering the name of the newly opened establishment a few blocks from ours.
"Yeah, that one," She said. "When will you be free?"
"I am quite busy these days but I could use a date on the weekend, what do you say?" I said.
"Well, the weekend sounds amazing. I'll see you then." She said.
"Yeah, see you," I said. I saw Mom walking towards me with her usual look; a handbag on her right hand and some envelopes on the right. "Hey Jaz, I need to go. Mom's here already."
"Oh, that's Jazree?" Mom said. "Tell her I said hello."
"Tell her I said hi too," Jazree said, obviously after hearing what my Mom said.
"She says hi too, Mom," I said.
"So, are you ready to go?" Mom said.
"Bye Jaz, Got to go," I said.
"Bye, take care," She said.
"You too," I said and ended the call.
Mom nodded and walked ahead of me and into the parking area. She unlocked her car and I settled on the front seat. She put her stuff on the back seat and turned to the driver's seat. Mom has been driving this car for over five years now and I can still remember that this is the car she used to drive me to the university. I can still recall those fun days of my life.
"Are you ready? Fasten your seatbelt." She said.
I don't know but I am feeling a little nervous today. Why could it be? I tried recalling if I had a job that I forgot to do but I did not. I worked hard and finished my entire task yesterday so what could be the reason why I am feeling nervous now?
"Hey, you're quiet, what's wrong?" Mom said.
"Oh, mom about what happened earlier," I said. "The one when you broke your mirror?"
"What about it?" She said.
"Have you heard that it is a sign of bad luck?" I said. "I mean, breaking things like that according to the elderly are unlucky, don't you know that?"
"Who told you that? Is it your grandmother?" She said referring to her mom. "That's just a superstitious belief dear. Don't believe those kinds of things. The one who controls your luck is yourself, understood?"
I nodded and fastened my seatbelt. "Alright Mom," I said.
"Alright, we better get going," She said and started the car engine.
~~~
"So tell me, is there someone special that you are seeing right now?" Mom said as we started hitting the road.
"What? No, jeez Mom, what kind of question is that? I am not seeing someone, okay?" I said.
"Why? That's normal for girls at your age to do that. I just want you to know that you can tell us, you can tell me." She said.
I nodded. "I know; it's just that I am really not into someone."
"Alright," Mom said and nodded.
"Mom, what was it like when you first saw Dad?" I said.
"What do you mean?" She said.
"What did you feel at that time? Was it love at first sight?" I said.
"It wasn't, actually," She said. "It was way far from being in love at first sight."
"And what does that supposed to mean?" I said.
"We were rivals; he was an achiever back then and so was I. We tried to beat each other and so we developed hatred between us." She said. "But all of it came to an end when we were both chosen as our school's representative for a science innovation contest. We found out that we didn't have to be enemies and instead we became friends and that's where everything started."
"Wow, that is the first time that I heard of your love story," I said. "That is amazing."
Mom turned to me and smiled. "It is, and until now, nothing has changed. I still feel the same way for him."
I nodded and looked straight ahead. My eyes grew wide when I saw what was about to happen. A huge truck was about to hit us from the side and it looked like it isn't stopping anytime soon. "Mom, look out!" I turned to Mom and she was already looking at it and was trying to stop our car but it was too late; we were already inches away from the truck and the next thing I knew, everything was black
