Evalina glanced at the rearview mirror while gripping the steering wheel tightly. The engine sounded normal, but her heart pounded erratically. She didn’t know why, but ever since she left Hunter’s house to inspect the new project site on the city outskirts, a sense of unease had clung to her like a shadow.
Towering trees lined both sides of the road. The descent was gradual, but the car started to pick up more speed than it should.
“Why do the brakes feel… strange?” she muttered, gently pressing the brake pedal.
