It took us quite a while until the island was nothing more than a dark shadow on the horizon, barely more than a memory in the pitch-black night. Had we made it? Had we escaped? 

It seemed impossible that they could still track us out here on the open sea—among all the waves, in the endless blackness of the sea. The helicopters wouldn't be able to spot us in this darkness, and the large ship was too cumbersome to follow us in this chaos.
