My mother was home by the time I came back from university. I didn’t mind, she had earlier given me permission to further my education.

Only that I wasn’t expecting her home so early. Jake was still at the hospital and she didn’t call to tell me she was arriving.

What emergency brought her home then?

“Mom? You’re back early and working already.” I inched close to her on the dining table. Her bag hasn’t been unpacked.
