Chapter 2

Chapter 2

I lay on my side, quietly watching the birch trees outside the window.

Footsteps echoed at the door, different from the usual sound of the caregiver's steps.

I turned my head slightly, and saw Barry walking in slowly, placing the flowers he brought on the bedside table.

I stared at him, expressionless.

I had been in the hospital for a month. Aside from the day of the accident, when he rushed in to take the blood plasma, he hadn't shown up since.

It was only thanks to the nurse, who couldn't stand it any longer, that a caregiver was arranged to look after me.

Meanwhile, my so-called husband was busy caring for another woman.

Three days after the miscarriage, when I was finally able to get out of bed, I wanted to confront Barry. Just as I reached the door, I overheard the nurses gossiping at the station about Barry and Serena.

"What's the deal between that Serena and Dr. House? He doesn't even bother with his own wife, but runs to take care of some other woman."

"What do you think it is? She's probably his mistress. Didn't you see how she acts all cute around Dr. House? They shouldn't even call her Serena; Angelic bitch suits her better."

"The saddest part is Dr. House's wife. She just lost her child, and now she's losing her husband too. What a shame."

"Never thought Dr. House could be such a scumbag."

"Honestly, are there any decent men?"

I didn't listen to the rest.

Fueled by anger, I dragged myself to Serena's room.

She was staying in a VIP private suite.

I stood by the door and, through the window, saw Barry feeding her soup.

Serena pouted, pushing the spoon away, while Barry blew on it gently before offering it back to her.

I had never seen him so considerate.

I had always felt sorry for him, working long hours with countless patients, so I never asked him to do any housework. In the end, I was the fool.

The tenderness on Barry's face stung my eyes.

I turned back to my room.

"Claire, what happened with the baby was an accident. Don't be too sad, we can always have another," Barry said, grabbing my hand, snapping me out of my thoughts.

Looking at his face, so devoid of regret, I let out a cold laugh and shook off his hand. "You call that an accident? You stood there and let him die."

If I had the strength, I would've slapped him to drain the water from his brain.

"I begged you so desperately, and yet you wouldn't save our child. He was your child too!" I couldn't understand why he had been so heartless, why he could neglect his own child.

When he could be so gentle with someone else's.

Barry's face twisted in frustration as he shouted, "What else could I have done? Serena needed blood too! I couldn't just stand by and let her die!"

"So you chose to let your own child die," I said bitterly, a hollow smile on my lips.

Barry covered his face. "I didn't want the baby to die. I thought there was time, but the ambulance bringing the plasma got stuck in traffic."

I didn't want to hear his excuses. I was about to tell him to leave when his phone rang.

"Hello."

Having spent so much time in the noisy emergency room, Barry had gotten used to keeping the volume at maximum, so I could hear the woman on the other end clearly. She whined, saying she had woken up and was scared because Barry wasn't there.

After hanging up, Barry stood up, took a few steps toward the door, then turned back to me.

"There's an emergency patient. I have to get back to work. Take care of yourself."

And with that, he rushed out.

I swept the flowers he brought to the floor.

I would rather he didn't offer me his pathetic explanations than insult me with such flimsy lies.
