Serena walked out of the hospital and went straight to her car. She didn’t slow down or look around. She just wanted to sit.

She got in, locked the doors, and rested both hands on the steering wheel. For a few seconds, she just stared ahead. Her chest felt tight.

Then the tears came.

“I’m pregnant,” she said quietly, her voice shaking.

Saying it out loud made it feel heavier. She leaned forward and pressed her forehead against the wheel, crying softly.

Her hand moved to her stomach without her thinking about it. She pulled it back, then placed it there again.

“I don’t know what to do,” she whispered....
