Moments later,
Aria
I swung my legs over the side of the bed. The silk sheets felt nauseatingly smooth. The maid, Lila, let out a tiny gasp of terror, but I ignored her. I stood up, my balance perfect despite the unfamiliar body. I walked toward a full-length mirror made of polished obsidian.
The woman staring back was a masterpiece of cold aristocratic malice. Platinum-blonde hair, eyes the color of molten gold, and a face that was built to be hated. But as I looked closer, I saw the crimson flicker in the depths of those gold eyes.
The assassin was still in there.
“Lady Aria?” the maid whimpered again. “The Alpha Lord... your uncle... he says you must be ready. The Crown Prince is at the gates. He is here to... to end the your engagement.”
I looked at my hands again, clenching them into fists. The body was weak, the reputation was trashed, and the entire world was designed to see me dead. But they hadn't accounted for one thing.
They had put an assassin in the role of a victim.
The Labyrinth might have broken Aria, but it had only served to forge me.
"Lila," I said, my voice cutting through the girl's whimpering. "Stop crying. Get up and find me something black. We have a Prince to disappoint."
The game was supposed to end with my death. But Agent Zero didn't follow scripts. I was going to find the "System" that put me here, and I was going to tear it apart.
The Butcher had arrived in the garden of butterflies, and I was going to make sure that this time, it was the Alphas who learned the meaning of fear.
As I stood before the mirror, a translucent blue window flickered into existence before my eyes, pulsing with an unnatural light.
[SYSTEM SYNCHRONIZATION COMPLETE]
[HOST: ARIA BLACKWOOD]
[CURRENT STATUS: VILLAINESS]
[WARNING: CROWN PRINCE ARRIVING IN 5 MINUTES. CHOOSE YOUR DESTINY.]
I didn't flinch. I reached out a manicured finger and swiped the screen away.
"Destiny is for the weak," I murmured, watching my reflection's gold eyes flash crimson. "I'll take the throne instead."
I had just opened my mouth to ask Lila for a tactical map of the manor when the world froze.
Literally. The maid was suspended mid-whimper. A fly hung motionless in the air. The flames in the hearth stopped flickering, becoming a static image of orange and red.
[SCENARIO 1: THE PRINCE’S ARRIVAL]
[OBJECTIVE: ACCEPT YOUR DISGRACE]
Three glowing blue boxes materialized in the air, vibrating with a low-frequency hum that made my teeth ache.
[The Alpha Crown Prince wants to call of the engagement, how will you make him change his mind?]
Option A: [The Hysterical Plea] “No! Not Julian! I’ll do anything! Tell him I’ve changed!”
Option B: [The Arrogant Denial] “How dare he? I am an Alpha of the Blackwood line! He cannot discard me!”
Option C: [The Violent Tantrum] Throw the nearest vase at the maid and scream for your father.
I stared at the options with a simmering fury. They were all traps. Option A stripped my dignity; Option B cemented my role as a delusional lunatic; Option C made me look like a desperate child. All three roads led to the same destination: my eventual execution.
I felt a cold, oily pressure on my throat. My jaw moved against my will, my body leaning toward Option A. It was a parasitic pull, a digital leash trying to force me into the role of a pathetic, discarded woman.
"Get. Out. Of. My. Head!!!"
I fought back. I hadn't survived government conditioning to be a puppet for a dating sim. I focused on the "Vocal Lock," treating it like a physical barrier. I pushed against the code, my teeth grinding until I tasted blood.
[WARNING: HOST DEVIATION DETECTED.]
[ADMINISTERING NEURAL SHOCK.]
A bolt of agony flared in my brain. I took the hit, my knees barely buckling. But as I braced for the second shock, I felt something else.
“Don't... please...”
The voice was a ragged whimper from the base of my spine. I turned my focus inward and saw a wolf. It was Aria’s inner beast, but it was a nightmare. Its golden fur was matted with black, demonic ichor from obviously forcing it's way to me. It was mangled, its spirit shredded, barely hanging onto life. It was the only part of the original Aria that remained.
“Don't choose... Master...” the wolf rasped, its golden eyes filled with cataracts of pain. “If you fight... the System... it will delete me... it will delete us...”
The wolf nudged my mental hand toward the "Hysterical Plea" option, its tail tucked between its legs. It was a broken animal, so used to the whip that it feared the silence.
[UNAUTHORIZED INTERFERENCE BY SUB-ENTITY: 'ARIA'S WOLF'.]
[DELETING ANOMALY...]
A jagged red line like a "Deletion String" shot out from the System’s center. It struck the wolf in its scarred flank. The creature let out a soul-shattering howl of agony that vibrated through my very marrow.
The sight of that broken, loyal thing being tortured to protect me - a stranger who had stolen its late owner's body - ignited a rage I hadn't felt since Jax forced me off that railing.
“You’re in my house now,” I hissed at the blue screens. “And I don’t like your rules.”
I didn't choose. I attacked.
I plunged my consciousness directly into the red-hot core of the "Penalty Protocol." I didn't care about the pain. I searched for the logic gates. I found the "Admin Privileges" meant for the Player, Chloe - the golden child of this world - and I tore them out of the script.
> RUN: SYSTEM_HACK_V1.0
> COMMAND: DISABLE_DIALOGUE_CONSTRAINTS
> COMMAND: UNBIND_LEVELING_LIMITS
> STATUS: OVERRIDE SUCCESSFUL.
The blue screens shattered. The red deletion string snapped, recoiling into the void. The world lurched back into motion.
The fire roared. The maid fell forward, gasping for air as the invisible weight of the System vanished.
I felt the change instantly. A new bar appeared in the corner of my vision - a silver Experience meter that began to pulse. I had hijacked the Player’s growth potential. I was no longer a villainess. I was a glitch with a kill-count.
I walked toward the maid, Lila. My moves were fluid now, the sluggishness of the transition purged. I reached down and gripped her chin, forcing her to look up. I didn't slap her. I didn't scream.
I gave her a slow, mysterious smirk.
“Lila,” I said, my voice a low, melodic threat. “Go to the wardrobe. Get me the black silk. The one that says I’ve already buried my past.”
“M-My Lady?” she whispered, her pupils blown wide with shock.
“The Prince is waiting,” I said, stepping out of the silk sheets with the grace of a stalking leopard. “And I’d hate to keep him from his own funeral.”
