Chapter 5 - The King the Labyrinth Could Not Kill

Moments later,

Alpha's study,

Silas Blackwood dropped his head into his hands, the mahogany desk feeling like a coffin lid. The silence in the study was deafening, broken only by the ragged breathing of his sons. He had just signed away the autonomy of the twelfth-ranked pack to a girl who spoke of blood as if it were a common grocery list.

"What have we done?" Elias whispered, his voice trembling as he rubbed his throat where the wind of the blade had passed.

"We didn't do anything," Silas replied, his voice hollow and ancient. "We just survived the first night of the new world."

Meanwhile... In the Northern Tundra

The wind didn’t just howl; it screamed in submission.

The blizzard was a white wall of ice and fury, a storm capable of flash-freezing a lesser wolf in seconds, yet the snow didn’t dare touch the man walking through the heart of the gale. High King Malphas Volkov moved like a tectonic plate—slow, inevitable, and devastating. He was draped in black dragon hide, his massive frame further bulked by a polar bear-rimmed cloak that trailed through the red-stained snow.

He was a titan of obsidian and shadow, his 6’5” frame cutting a silhouette that looked like a god of war carved from the mountain itself. His long, midnight-dark hair whipped like a silk banner in the storm, and a rugged, sexy beard framed a jawline sharp enough to draw blood. Every footfall of his heavy, fur-lined boots caused the permafrost to groan and shatter.

Across his massive, broad shoulders, a heavy harness of leather and steel secured an obsidian-weave basket. It was a strange sight for a King, yet the weight he carried was more precious than any crown.

As he crossed the threshold of the Northern Citadel, the massive iron gates—frozen shut for a year—shuddered and flew open as if pushed by an invisible hand.

"The King..." a voice whispered, barely audible over the wind.

Within the courtyard, the twelve Elders of the North stood frozen. These were men who had lived through centuries of brutal winters and border wars, yet as Malphas approached, they collapsed to their knees as one. Their foreheads hit the ice. They were shocked, their hearts hammering with a joy that bordered on religious fervor... and a terror that made their blood run cold. Their sovereign, the half-demon Alpha who had vanished into the Luna Labyrinth, had returned.

Malphas didn’t acknowledge them. He didn’t offer a nod to the men who had kept his borders or a glance to the women weeping at his feet. His crimson eyes, glowing with a demonic light, were fixed on the heavy oak doors of his private sanctum.

"My King! You live!"

The voice belonged to Ivan, his Second-in-Command, a grizzled Alpha with scars that told a thousand stories. Beside him stood Severin, the royal butler. Both men rushed toward him, their faces masks of disbelief.

"Malphas, we thought the Luna Labyrinth had claimed..." Ivan’s voice died in his throat as he got within five feet.

The air around Malphas wasn't just cold... it was stagnant, heavy with the scent of sulfur and a primal, predatory power. Malphas stopped, the sheer gravity of his presence forcing them both to stumble back.

"To my chambers," Malphas commanded. His voice was a tectonic rumble, vibrating in their very marrow. "Now."

He strode past them, the obsidian basket on his back pulsing with a rhythmic, ethereal light. Inside the royal chambers, the hearth fire ignited spontaneously, the flames turning a deep, unnatural blue. He unbuckled the harness with terrifyingly controlled precision, lowering the basket onto the massive bed of black furs.

Severin and Ivan hovered at the edge of the light, their eyes widening. Inside the basket, nestled in enchanted moss, were six massive eggs. Each was the size of an ostrich egg but made of a translucent, obsidian-like shell. Veins of gold and crimson pulsed beneath the surface, synchronized with the King’s own heartbeat.

"The Primordial Heirs," Ivan breathed, his face pale with joy and pure horror. "But... they require a Queen’s essence to stabilize. Who...?"

Malphas ignored him. He reached out, his large, scarred hand hovering just an inch above an egg pulsing with slow, lethargic light. His mind was thousands of miles away, anchored to a memory of a woman with eyes that had looked at his demonic form not with fear, but with the cold calculation of an equal.

"Mate," he whispered, the word a curse and a prayer.

"My King?" Severin asked. "We must prepare the hatching rituals. The Northern Packs—"

"The Northern Packs will know nothing," Malphas snapped. The crimson light in his eyes flared, casting long, demonic shadows against the obsidian walls. "Search the records. Every university, every pack, every border. Find a woman with the scent of winter and silver... a woman who walked out of the Luna Labyrinth alive."

Ivan frowned. "Sire, no one survives the Labyrinth. If she came out, she’s a goddess or a ghost."

"She is my mate," Malphas growled, the word causing the glass windows to crack. "She believes I am a monster. She thinks she can hide in the shadows of her pack, playing her little games with the trash princes."

He turned back to the basket, his fingers trailing over a reddish egg that sparked with a tiny flicker of lightning.

"She carried my heirs... she tasted my blood... and then she vanished," he said, his jaw tightening. "She thought the Luna Labyrinth was her prison... she doesn't realize it was my wedding gift."

"What are your orders, Sire?" Ivan asked, kneeling.

Malphas looked out the window toward the south, where the air was warmer. He could still smell her—a faint ghost of ozone and defiance.

"Prepare the legions," Malphas commanded, his cloak billowing behind him like wings of smoke. "And keep the cradle warm. Once these eggs hatch... I will burn every pack territory from here to the sea. I will tear down the Royal Capital stone by stone if I have to."

He reached into his vest and pulled out a small, silver butterfly-and-stars pendant—the one he had snatched from her during their struggle. He turned it over in his hand, the metal gleaming in the violet firelight.

"She survived the Labyrinth," Malphas whispered, a dark, possessive smile tugging at his lips. "Now, let’s see if she can survive me."
