I lifted my head. “I’m here.”

“That isn’t what I meant.”

I knew exactly what he meant. He wanted me beside him when he woke. He wanted tonight to mean I had returned for more than just a few stolen hours.

“You disappeared for a month,” he said into the quiet room. “You know I’m still angry, right?”

I stared at the moonlight filtering through the blinds before turning to face him. “You have every right to be.”

“It’s difficult to stay angry when you look at me like that.”

“Like what?”

“Like you’re about to say something that makes me forgive you.”
