Immediately after the guard I sent walked away, I walked back to Carl and whispered to him.

"Take care of the pack while I'm away. We need to find Esme, and I would want to get her myself."

Carl stared at me hesitantly. I already knew what was going through his head. He scratched his head and pressed his lips together before speaking.

"You already sent someone out there to get her. Don't you think they will find her? You don't trust them?"

I shook my head. Just like I thought. It was as though I read his mind. He asked exactly what I had expected him to ask....
