As the nurses quickly rushed into the ICU, Alvara stepped out. I could tell she was on the verge of breaking down but didn't.
“It's been a long day, Kai,” she said. “Let's go home.”
I agreed.
Before we could leave, one of the nurses at the reception pulled me over and told me that I'd be called in to collect Klein's remains.
The ride back home was long and quiet. Neither of us said a word. We didn't even cry.
On getting home, Alvara changed into her nightwear and tucked herself into bed.
“Goodnight,” I said, turning off the light.
“Goodnight.”
