“So you are here.”

Ember ignored the voice and burrowed further under the covers.

“I didn’t believe it when the building manager rang me and told me you’d arrived. I had to come here and check myself.”

The covers flew off and Ember blinked up into the livid face of her mother.

“Shouldn’t you be happy that I’m home?” Ember asked. “Isn’t that what you wanted?”

“And what if you’d been spotted coming into the building?” Laura asked, arms crossed and bright red nails tapping. “What if the press got a good look at you while you look like that?”
