The forest swallowed us in darkness, our breaths ragged, branches whipping at our faces as we tore through the undergrowth. The sound of pursuit echoed behind us, the crack of boots and snarls closing in. My wolf screamed at me to run faster, but my arms were already burning from holding Lydia, her small body clinging to me as if she knew the danger clawing at our heels.
