It was General Rowell, head of the local police force. He wore his signature arrogant and commanding look, feeling like he owned the whole world.

He smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “Dr. Aldrich,” he said coolly. “Good morning.”

Aldrich didn’t bother with a smile or the fake greetings. His voice was sharp. “Don’t trespass on my property again. This is a private residence.”

The general raised an eyebrow. “I am the law. I have the authority to be anyone’s guest without ringing an alarm. You should be honored to host such a respected man, Doc.”
