The bedroom door burst open at 2 AM, slamming against the wall with a crack that made my heart stop. Alex stood silhouetted in the doorway, his phone clutched in one hand, his face twisted with a rage I'd never seen before.

I froze in my wheelchair, my legs, which could actually walk now, tucked beneath the blanket. For six days, I'd been secretly exercising, hiding my recovery, spitting out the mercury-laced medications. But somehow, he knew.
