My heart stops when I see Sarah's hand frozen in her pocket, guilt written all over her face.
"Sarah," I repeat more firmly, "what's in your pocket?"
"Nothing," she says quickly, but her voice shakes. "Just... tissues. Lily was crying earlier."
I don't believe her for a second. The way she's holding her arm, the panic in her eyes, the way Alex is standing behind me like he's blocking my exit, everything about this situation screams danger.
"I need to examine Lily immediately," I say, moving toward the hospital bed. "Her blood work shows signs of heavy metal poisoning. Possibly mercury."
