At night, I sat on my bed after a shower and read a book.

I was losing sleep. I couldn't get used to the strange room and bed.

As I read, I vaguely heard strange sounds that seemed to be coming from downstairs.

Like someone in excruciating pain was holding back a suppressed moan.

Was it the wind? Or is it really someone?

If it was someone, who could it be?

It's almost eleven o'clock at night. The servants were all asleep. Was Arthur back?
