A month after our divorce cooling-off period, on the day we were supposed to finalize the paperwork, Zachary Mann was, unsurprisingly, late again.

Coincidentally, that day also marked the anniversary of our first meeting.

I waited for him outside the courthouse for what seemed like an eternity before he called me, his voice tinged with guilt.

He said something urgent had come up and he might be a bit late.

I understood all too well.

"What could possibly be more important than finalizing our divorce, Zachary?"

Zachary’s tone grew irritable and dismissive. "Of course, there’s a crisis with the project. We’re getting divorced, Kay. Stop making a fuss!"

This time, he wasn’t lying.

After all, Fern Medina was also involved in this project and had been recommended by Zachary himself.

Due to Fern’s lack of experience, Zachary had made many enemies and taken the fall numerous times.

So, most likely, this project crisis was yet another mess created by Fern. How could I dispute that a company project issue had arisen?

Throughout our two-year marriage, Zachary frequently bailed on me for Fern’s whims. I had grown used to it.

Fern would get a fever, and Zachary would rush him to the hospital.

Fern would get bullied at a party, and Zachary would stand up for him.

Fern couldn’t find a reasonably priced apartment, so Zachary let him live in one of our other properties—without consulting me, even though it was my house.

No matter what the issue was, Fern’s problems always took precedence over our family, over me.

So, I decided to set him free.

Yet, on the very last day, Zachary still flaked on me.

And, as expected, it was because of Fern.

By now, my heart had turned to ice, and I felt not a shred of expectation for this man.

Finally, he arrived just as the courthouse was about to close.

We successfully got our divorce finalized.

Zachary stood there, bewildered, staring at the divorce certificate. He looked at me and said, "Are you really sure? If you come crawling back, don’t expect me to take you back."

I turned and walked away without a second thought.

Zachary sneered, "Kay Snider, don’t think I can’t live without you! If you have any guts, don’t ever come back!"

I really couldn't come back.

An earthquake struck the mountain town. I volunteered to help, and while treating patients in the disaster area, an aftershock occurred.

I was buried in the remote mountain town, along with my two-month-old unborn child. We closed our eyes forever.

For some reason, my soul did not reincarnate after death but returned to Zachary Mann's side.

It's really frustrating, not finding peace even after death.

I watched as she dealt with the troubles she caused for Fern Medina, cleaning up the mess, overwhelmed.

With him, she attended various business banquets, met different leaders, and mingled with giants in the internet industry.

Then, at another business banquet, Fern Medina indeed appeared as his date.

She held Zachary Mann's arm and leaned intimately on his shoulder, shyly calling him, "Zach."

I wondered if I saw it wrong.

I saw Zachary Mann frown slightly and discreetly pull away from Fern Medina.

"Fern, this is a formal occasion, and we need to mind our roles."

Unexpectedly, Fern Medina just smiled gracefully.

"There was never anything between us. If we act too distant, it would seem suspicious, wouldn't it, Zach?"

"You don't think I’m unworthy as your date, do you?"

"Don't I look beautiful today?"

Zachary Mann looked at her deeply and finally smiled helplessly.

"Very beautiful."

Fern Medina eagerly clung to Zachary Mann's arm, coyly saying, "I knew our Zachary Mann was the kindest. With how close we are, how could he be distant with me?"

Zachary Mann fondly brushed her nose with his finger.

"You're the best at getting your way with me."

They continued to drink and chat with the people around them, discussing business.

Meanwhile, I kept thinking about one thing.

I looked at the calm expressions around me.

It seemed that everyone was accustomed to Fern Medina being Zachary Mann's date.

Some even joked about her and Zachary Mann, indicating they were already seen as a couple.

I just never knew.
