"Kay Snider?!"
"Yeah, that’s right, the city's most famous gynecologist, Kay Snider."
Upon hearing my name, Zachary Mann, who was always patient with Fern Medina, momentarily froze and ignored her.
Fern bit her lip, looking aggrieved. "Zach, did you hear what the doctor said? It’s not that I want to trouble Kay Snider, but for my baby, I have no choice. Please, ask her for me, okay?"
Zachary Mann rarely frowned. "It's not that serious right now. With proper care, surgery might not even be necessary..."
Fern mumbled, "As a mother, is it wrong to want the best treatment for my child? Kay Snider is a doctor; she wouldn't just stand by and do nothing, right?"
The doctor next to them also chimed in, "Yes, seeking help from Dr. Kay Snider is the wisest decision right now."
Zachary hesitated, clutching his phone. Finally, he made a decision. He opened our chat and sent me a message:
[Fern Medina is pregnant and needs surgery. Clear your schedule next week and check on her.]
After sending the message, he nervously fiddled with his nails. I knew him too well; it was a sign of his anxiety. But, Zachary Mann, what's the point of being nervous now? You'll never get a reply from me. After all, how could a dead person respond to a message? And you'll never see me perform surgery on Fern Medina. How could a dead person pick up a scalpel?
Fern, noticing Zachary’s phone remained silent, asked worriedly, "Zach, did Kay misunderstand something? Is she mad? This baby is my decision; it has nothing to do with you! Maybe I should explain to her."
Feeling a sudden panic, Zachary checked my social media. Seeing a video of my departure to Mountain City for volunteer work, he relaxed and shook his head.
"She's volunteering in Mountain City. Maybe the signal there is bad."
The doctor nearby said, "Time is of the essence. If we could get Dr. Kay Snider's notes, I might be able to give it a try."
Zachary knew exactly where I kept all my important documents. With Fern's hopeful gaze on him, he drove resolutely to our former home and opened my safe. The password was his birthday. I was a bit angry that I didn't change the lock or the password before I left, allowing him to invade my life once again. He easily took away the research materials that my mentor and I had worked on for years. I wasn't angry, though. Both my mentor and I were dead, but there were still many people in the world who needed saving. I just hoped that the doctor could use this method to help more people.
At that moment, Fern gasped with delight. "This bracelet is so beautiful."
Zachary immediately snapped, "Don’t touch that. It was left to Kay by her mother."
But Fern, looking wronged, said, "But it’s so beautiful. The company’s product launch is tomorrow, and my dress needs a little something... Please, just let me borrow it for one day. Kay won't notice it for just one day."
Zachary couldn’t refuse Fern’s request and carefully handed her the bracelet. "Only for one day."
It was a bracelet my mother had given me before she died, one she made herself. Zachary knew how important it was to me. And yet, he still gave it away.
On the day of the new product launch, Fern Medina, wearing a tight, sexy red dress, looked completely out of place with my bracelet.
To get what was important to me, she even sacrificed her own taste in fashion.
Still, Fern Medina was truly beautiful.
No wonder Zachary Mann kept compromising for her, unable to forget her after all these years.
Yet, some things will never fit, no matter how hard you try.
The cool, icy blue sapphire bracelet didn't match with her flamboyant personality.
Nor did it suit her calculated nature.
The moment I saw it, I couldn't help but lunge forward, trying to snatch the only memento my mother left for me.
But I passed right through her.
I had forgotten that I was just a soul.
The dead can’t touch or protect anything.
Suddenly, the next second, an accident occurred.
While Fern Medina was fixing her hair, the bracelet got caught. She yanked it hard.
The bracelet snapped.
Icy blue sapphires scattered everywhere.
Seeing the broken bracelet, my heart ached so much that I couldn't breathe.
Something I treasured the most was shattered just like that. I thought death would numb my heart, but the pain was still there.
Sadly, no matter how heartbroken I felt, I couldn't shed a single tear.
Turns out, being dead is pitifully helpless; you can't even express your emotions.
Fern Medina stared at the scattered bracelet, stumbling to the ground in panic.
At that moment, she couldn't bring herself to look Zachary Mann in the eye.
"Zach, I swear I didn't mean to... please believe me!"
Zachary Mann slightly lowered his head, his expression unreadable, making it impossible to guess what he was thinking.
After a long pause, Zachary Mann gently said, "It's alright. When Kay Snider comes back, I'll explain everything to her. She’ll understand."
Fern Medina nodded, "Kay Snider loves you so much... she'll definitely forgive you."
Zachary Mann said nothing more. He bent down, picked up each sapphire from the ground, cradling them in his hand, and walked out of the venue.
He went straight back to the house we used to live in together.
Without turning on the lights, he sat on the sofa, lost in thought, smoking an entire pack of cigarettes. Finally, he took out his phone.
He dialed my number.
