The room was falling apart. Sparks spat from broken wires. Machines screamed like animals. The ceiling shook. Dust fell. Three people stood in the middle of the chaos and kept looking at each other like they were all the important thing left.
A voice came from the broken screens. It sounded like many people talking at once—soft, cruel, and very sure of itself.
“Keep hurting each other,” the voice said. “Every wound makes you weaker. When you are weak enough, we will take what’s left.”
Jason’s face was hard as rock. He looked at the screens and shouted, “Who are you? Show yourself!”
