Outside, the cold air wrapped around us the moment I stepped out of the building with her thrown over my shoulder. She was still breathing sharply, her heartbeat fast enough to pound through my skin. I didn’t say a word as a black SUV rolled to a stop in front of us, the headlights sweeping across the half-constructed walls.

The driver stepped out immediately and opened the back door, bowing his head. I finally lowered Eve to the ground. Her legs were unsteady, but she pushed away from me the moment her feet touched the dirt.
