The final divorce hearing was supposed to be the end of something.
I had imagined it a hundred times in the months leading up to it, the moment the judge signed the dissolution order, the particular quality of the air afterward, the specific lightness of a life no longer legally attached to the wrong person. I had imagined walking out of that courtroom into whatever came next with my head up and my hands free.
I had not imagined Zachary Jonas standing up in the middle of those proceedings and announcing to a courtroom that I was mentally unfit to manage my own affairs.
