Why are they calling each other mates?

Maybe they know each other before.

“Tonia?” I called but I guess she’s not listening to me.

“Tonia?” I called again, she still didn’t give me her attention.

I move closer to her and shake her hand, she snaps out of her daze and faces me.

“Jane?” she asked.

“Hmm..mmmm!” I nod and narrowed my eyes at her.

I see her ears turn pink..she’s blushing!
