The banging started again. Harder this time.

“SIENNA! OPEN THIS DOOR!” My dad’s voice was full of rage, trembling with anger.

I pressed my back against the door, my chest tightening. My fingers clawed at the edge, but I couldn’t move. I couldn’t open it. Not yet. Not now.

“Dad… please… I…” My voice cracked, and tears blurred my vision.

“LOCKED AGAIN?!” he shouted, hammering his fists. “Do you think I won’t break it down?”

I sank to the floor, hugging my knees, shaking uncontrollably. The step-mom’s quiet sobs drifted under the door. “Sienna… baby… please…”

I wanted to disappear. To melt into the floor.
