The shouting outside my locked door had faded a bit, but anger still sat in the air like smoke—thick and choking.

Hours passed. My eyes burned, my throat hurt, but I stayed curled in a ball, clutching my phone with Kendra’s messages blowing up every few minutes.

A car door slammed outside.

Then hurried footsteps.

Voices.

Raised. Sharp. Angry.
