The sun was beginning to set, casting a warm golden light over the horizon. The air had a heavy, charged feel, as though the entire ship was holding its breath. I sat on the edge of the ship’s deck, my legs dangling over the side as I watched the waves crash against the hull. The salt air whipped through my hair, and for a moment, I allowed myself to feel something close to peace.
But it didn’t last.
