Chapter 6 A heart-stopping encounter

Chapter 6 A heart-stopping encounter

The birthday party continued until dawn, I had to stay there attending to all the guests, including Nelson's parents, my future in-laws, who were overjoyed to know that we already had a date for the wedding.

What I thought would be a birthday party had turned into my worst nightmare. My wedding commitment had overshadowed my celebration of turning another year of life, but the disappointment of knowing that I had fallen in love at first sight with that attractive man who turned out to be my sister's husband, was a thorn that was completely buried. in my heart.

I couldn't wait for it all to end and lock me in my room for the next 50 years.

(...)

The next day...

I didn't want to leave my room, however, it was inevitable not to since April went to look for me like she did in the old days, when we were a happy family.

 Good morning sleepy head. It's a beautiful day, breakfast is ready.

He told me as he opened the window curtains, I hadn't slept at all all night so I didn't want to get out of bed.

- Good morning April, the truth is that I have no appetite.

 Please, Ana Paula, join me for breakfast, mom and dad haven't gotten up yet and I don't want to eat alone.

 Alone? But... And where is your husband?

- He left early because a colleague with whom he did the conference in Cancun called him, apparently he had something important to tell him.

 And does it always come out so unforeseen?

- Oh sister! I know what you are implying, but let me tell you that my Luis José is the most faithful man in this world, he is incapable of deceiving me. And for your peace of mind, we have never had any problems with that.

I swallowed deeply, I couldn't believe that April trusted him so much, for me the idea of having to live with this remorse and not being able to look my sister in the eyes was unbearable.

Just at that moment my cell phone rang, I had received a message, she told me very politely:

- Oh, let me pass it to you!

I immediately told him, terrified, as I jumped out of bed:

-No! Don't bother, I'll look for it.

- It seems that you were waiting for that message, and I don't think it was from your fiancé, because the face you had last night was more like a wake.

- I was very tired from the trip and as I told you last night, I had a bad migraine.

- Don't tell me that the message they sent you is from your unknown savior, be very careful Ana Paula, look that you already have the wedding date, you can't give so much importance to a stranger that you may never see again.

While April was talking non-stop, I opened the message, it was from an unknown number that said:

- Hello, it's Luis José, this is my number, I need to talk please, I'll wait for you at the Garibaldi café in half an hour. Do not miss.

I felt a chill invade my body, I didn't know what to do, I had the opportunity to tell April everything at that moment, but I didn't have the courage to do it.

Furthermore, what Luis José had told me about his state of health kept going through my mind, because if it were true, it would cause him to have a massive heart attack.

“Oh no, don't even think about it, better not”

 Better not what? What are you talking about?

Without realizing it I was thinking out loud, I think that at that moment the person who was going to have the heart attack was me.

- Ah! I better not have breakfast because a friend just wrote to me who wants to see me because she has to tell me something urgent.

– A friend? Did a friend seriously write to you? Isn't it rather that unknown savior?

– Of course not! I already told you that it's a friend and you better go have breakfast, because she's expecting me in half an hour. We talk later.

April left me alone and went to the dining room a little upset because she wanted to share more with me, we hadn't seen each other in a year and the most logical thing was for me to be with her, but I urgently needed to talk to Luis José and make things clear.

I sent a message letting him know that I was leaving for coffee, I dressed in the first thing I found and left the house before my parents woke up.

(...)

I drove the car in a hurry, I was eager to get there. I parked a few streets away from the cafe and put on sunglasses with a sports cap.

Upon entering the cafe, Luis José was there, sitting at one of the tables, he was wearing sports clothes, he looked as handsome as the first time I saw him, he immediately stood up and I slowly approached him. When I was in front of him, he told me:

- You look beautiful.

- I didn't come for you to praise me, I'm here so we can talk about my sister April.

 I'm sorry, excuse me Ana Paula, it wasn't my intention, but please take a seat. Want a coffee?

- I don't want to drink anything, I just want you to tell me if it's true about my sister's illness.

He ordered a coffee, took a sip, and then looked me in the eyes as he began to tell me:

- We met a year and a few months ago, she came to my office for a routine check-up, but the studies I performed indicated that she had a heart problem, I advised her that she should go to a specialist and she did.

He paused, he looked really very affected, which told me that he was not really lying to me, then he continued:

- Then a few days later she returned to my office and this time very depressed, she told me that they had detected heart failure, which is why she frequently suffered from lack of oxygen, her legs became swollen, she had dizziness and a lot of physical fatigue.

-But why hasn't he said anything? We are your family, we have the right to know.

 Because she didn't want to talk to your parents anymore after we got married, she chose to lead a quiet life and avoid having confrontations with the family.

-But I am her sister, she has been able to tell me, we have always been very close.

– I don't know, Ana Paula, the truth is that I have only respected her decision. And as you understand, you can't tell him that you know.

 It is impossible for me to tell her that I am already aware of her illness because her husband, who I made love to over the weekend in Cancun, asked me not to tell him anything to prevent him from having a heart attack. You are a cynic! My poor sister doesn't deserve to have a man like you by her side.

—Please Ana Paula, try to control yourself, you haven't let me finish telling you how we got married, please let me explain. I know that when you know the whole truth, you will understand many things, I am not a womanizing man or a scoundrel as you are imagining.

—The only thing I know is that I never want to see you again in my life.

—But what are you talking about if you're engaged and getting married in a month? You didn't tell me that and yet you made love to me.

—That is different and I am not going to give you explanations about it, it is my life and you are no longer interested.

When I was about to get up from the table, Luis José took me by the arm and told me in a strong voice:

—You're wrong, everything that has to do with you interests me and what we experienced this weekend was real, I made love to you like I have never done with another woman.

-Be quiet! —I said furiously as I let go of my arm and suddenly I heard a voice behind me saying:

—Ana Paula, what are you doing here at this hour?

—Nelson!

My heart began to beat like a million, while Luis José remained totally paralyzed.

The last thing I expected was to find my fiancé right there in that cafe.
