I did not know how long I had been chained to the wall when the Patriarch came back. Time moved strangely in the dark room and I kept drifting in and out of consciousness.

"How are you feeling?" he asked like he actually cared.

"Like I am chained to a wall. How do you think I feel?"

"Still defiant I see. Your mother was the same way. She never broke no matter what I did to her."

"Do not talk about my mother."

"Why not? She was magnificent. So strong and proud. It was almost a shame to kill her."
