Chapter 5 The Threat from the Grave

Chapter 5 The Threat from the Grave

Lucian’s hand slowly slid off Clara’s waist, though his dark eyes stayed fixed on the sleek black envelope in Silas’s hand. The cold ocean wind swept across the balcony again, but the air around the three of them felt completely frozen.

Silas stepped out onto the stone floor, his casual smile disappearing into a sharp, icy look. He reached into his pocket, pulled out a small silver pocketknife, and sliced through the thick red wax seal with one quick motion. He pulled out a stack of shiny paper photos along with a folded letter written on heavy white paper.

"Read it aloud," Lucian commanded, his deep voice dangerously quiet.

Silas unfolded the paper, his eyes scanning the black ink. "Victor writes that he knows Clara is staying under our roof. He says he spent the last six months following her every move while she worked at The Velvet Crown. He took dozens of high definition photos of her serving drinks, surrounded by rich men in VIP rooms."

Silas held up the photos under the bright moonlight. Clara’s breath caught in her throat, her face instantly turning pale.

The pictures showed her wearing her short hostess dress and satin mask, serving expensive drinks, standing close to wealthy older men, and sitting near VIP tables. Out of context, the photos were carefully angled to make her look like a cheap woman selling her body in a shady night club rather than a desperate girl working hard to survive.

"He says if we do not wire five million dollars into his private bank account by tomorrow evening," Silas continued, his voice dripping with anger, "he will send these photos to every major newspaper and social blog in the country. He wants to print the headline that Eleanor Vance's sweet little daughter became a club girl to pay off her mother's secret shame."

"That lying bastard!" Clara gasped out, her fists clenching so tight her nails bit into her palms. Hot tears of absolute rage burned behind her eyes. "My mother was a good woman! She never had any secret shame! Victor created those fake debts himself to steal her money! Now he wants to drag her memory through the dirt just to fill his pockets again!"

The heavy terrace door swung wide open, and Jax stepped out onto the balcony like an angry storm. His huge shoulders filled the doorway, his broad chest rising and falling fast as he looked at the pictures in Silas’s hand. He had clearly heard every single word from inside the bedroom.

Jax snatched the photos from Silas, his dark eyes flashing with pure murder. With one quick flex of his huge hands, Jax ripped the photos straight down the middle, shredding them into tiny white pieces before tossing them over the stone balustrade into the wind.

"I am going to find that trash right now," Jax growled, his deep voice rumbling like thunder in his chest. "I will break both his legs, snap his fingers, and throw him off the ocean pier. Let him try to write a blackmail letter from the bottom of the sea."

"No," Lucian said sharply, stepping between Jax and the balcony edge. "Violence is too easy for a man like Victor. If you beat him up, he will run straight to the police, play the victim, and use his news contacts to leak those photos anyway. We do not just beat our enemies, Jax. We destroy them completely."

Jax stopped, his heavy jaw tight as he glared at his older brother. "So what is your grand plan, Lucian? We just sit here and let him ruin her name?"

"Not at all," Lucian said, a dark, wicked smirk slowly spreading across his handsome face. He turned back to face Clara, his sharp eyes sweeping over her bare shoulders and flushed cheeks.

"Tomorrow night is the annual Vance Holdings Masquerade Ball. Every rich investor, politician, and newspaper reporter in the city will be in that ballroom. Victor thinks he can use Clara’s club job to humiliate her and force us to pay him. So we are going to do the exact opposite."

Silas raised an eyebrow, a slow, clever smile returning to his face. "You want to bring her to the ball as our guest?"

"Not just a guest," Lucian corrected, his low voice sounding like a dark promise. "We will present Clara at the ball as our exclusive personal partner. We will dress her in gold and diamonds.

We will show the entire world that she is not a disgraced club girl, but a powerful queen standing beside the three most dangerous men in this city. When Victor sees her walking on our arms, holding total power over his company, his blackmail will become completely worthless. He will be utterly ruined in front of every investor he tried to fool."

Clara felt her heart hammering against her ribs. The idea of walking into a room full of high society elites made her stomach turn, but the thought of slapping Victor's fake pride right out of his mouth in front of the whole world made her blood sing with excitement.

"I want to see his face fall," Clara whispered, her eyes burning with fierce determination. "I want him to know he lost."

"Good," Lucian said softly, stepping right back into her space. He reached out, his long fingers gently sliding under her chin to tilt her face up toward his.

His touch was warm and possessive, sending a sweet wave of shivers straight down her spine. "Because to pull this off, you have to play your role perfectly. Every man in that room will look at you. Every woman will envy you. But everyone will know that you belong only to us."

Lucian turned his head toward Silas. "Go get the delivery from my study."

Silas nodded, turning around and walking swiftly into the bedroom. A minute later, he returned carrying a sleek, heavy black box wrapped in thick velvet ribbon. He walked up to Clara and handed the box straight to her.

Clara took the heavy box into her arms, her fingers tracing the soft velvet cover. "What is this?"

"Open it," Lucian commanded quietly.

Clara lifted the heavy lid. Inside lay a breathtaking evening dress made of pure backless crimson silk that felt like liquid ice under her fingertips. The red fabric glistened softly under the moonlight, cut so low in the back that it would expose every inch of her smooth spine.

Beside the gown lay a stunning jewelry piece that made Clara’s breath stop completely. It was a thick collar necklace made of pure white platinum, encrusted with hundreds of tiny sparkling diamonds that caught the light like stars. In the center hung a small platinum ring clasp, looking exactly like an ultra luxury diamond leash collar meant for an absolute queen.

Clara looked up from the box, her lips parted in shock as her eyes met Lucian's dark, heavy gaze.

Lucian stepped closer, his warm thumb gently stroking her lower lip, his voice dropping into a deep, mesmerizing whisper that vibrated right through her chest.

"Put it on tomorrow night, Clara," Lucian whispered, his eyes burning with intense, possessive desire. "Your transformation begins tonight."
