Chapter 6

Maverick's countenance darkened entirely, emitting a cold snort before he turned away.

Genesis, observing from the side, witnessed everything, noticing a heightened intensity in Jocelyn's gaze.

When she had earlier expressed her belief in Jocelyn's innocence rather than acquiescing to Maverick's wishes, it was merely reluctance.

Now, however, she was truly beginning to embrace her prospective daughter-in-law.

The host, with discernment, stepped forward, "Quiet down, everyone. I announce, the engagement ceremony begins now."

Jocelyn, radiant and composed in casual attire, and Brian, seated confidently in his wheelchair with clear eyes and a distinguished demeanor, graced the occasion.

Their engagement banquet eschewed the usual pomp and circumstance, instead exuding a distinct charm.

After the celebration, Genesis affectionately pulled Jocelyn aside, growing fonder with each moment, "Jo, can I call you Jo? You're family now. Starting today, you should live with us."

The rift between the Hemsworth and Romain families had been provoked, yet Genesis remained sincerely attentive to her, warming Jocelyn's heart. "Aunt Genesis, I appreciate your kindness. However, I have some personal matters to attend to. I'll come visit in a few days."

Genesis's refined features showed a hint of disappointment, yet he found solace in Jocelyn's lack of interest in mere social climbing. "Very well, I'll have the driver escort you."

"No need, I'll take a taxi."

Brian, who had quietly observed Jocelyn all this while, suddenly spoke up, "It's unsafe for a young woman alone. I'll take you home."

At his words, both Genesis and Jocelyn looked at him in surprise.

Seated calmly in his wheelchair, Brian's striking eyes lingered on Jocelyn, seemingly filled with boundless tenderness towards her.

Genesis, astonished by his typically indifferent son's sudden attachment to his new fiancée, and Jocelyn, skeptical of his heavily bandaged body, resembling a refined mummy, wondered if he could manage.

She couldn't help but smile at the thought of needing assistance to get him into a car.

As she envisioned the scene, a soft smile unconsciously graced Jocelyn's lips.

Noticing their speechless expressions, Brian raised an eyebrow, "Is there a problem?"

"No, no problem," Genesis hurriedly replied, "It's just the first time I've seen you so taken with a girl. Looks like you've finally come around."

Brian chuckled lightly, neither confirming nor denying.

He simply felt Jocelyn was not an ordinary university student and wanted to test her.

Jocelyn naturally didn't believe he was interested in her and politely declined, "Young Master Brian, focus on your recovery first!"

As she spoke, she leaned closer to his ear, gently parting her lips, "Be more careful next time. Not every encounter will be as fortunate as meeting me."

A faint, refreshing fragrance wafted through as Brian's nostrils flared slightly, momentarily entranced by her close, fair profile.

Did she just... recognize him?

Before she could stand straight, she was unexpectedly pulled back, nearly falling into his arms. Fortunately, she reacted quickly, gripping the wheelchair's armrest.

Meeting his teasing gaze, Jocelyn realized he had done it intentionally.

Just as she was about to speak, his magnetic, deep voice whispered in her ear, "Rest assured, my lady. I will certainly take good care of myself. In the future, I won't let you dwell alone."

His flirtatious words tingled Jocelyn's ears, causing a slight blush. She quickly straightened herself.

This fiancé picked up off the ground was indeed interesting.

Knowing she had been recognized but remaining calm, not only unflustered but even seizing the opportunity to tease him.

She smiled knowingly, placing a hand affectionately on Brian's shoulder, and meaningfully said, "Take good care of yourself."

With that, she lightly tapped his injured back.

Brian grunted softly. His fiancée wasn't holding back!

Genesis watched the affectionate exchange with a smile, personally escorting Jocelyn into the elevator.

Once outside the hotel, she immediately spotted the lingering Seamus family at the entrance, their expressions cool. She dialed a number.

Seamus, sharp-eyed, also spotted her, his irritated expression transforming instantly into one of anticipation.

Jocelyn noted his subtle change but refrained from jesting. He truly was a master of disguise.

As she passed, she completely ignored him, walking forward on her own.

Seamus coughed and stepped forward to intercept her, trying to please, "Jo, you've finally come out. Did the Romain family give you any trouble?"

He knew well that despite Brian's disability, as long as he remained in control of the Romain family, the Hemsworth family would benefit.

Seeing his hypocrisy, Jocelyn felt nauseous and completely ignored him.

Seamus, ignored, grew impatient, but considering Jocelyn's current status, he continued to flatter, "Jo, we're all family. Your aunt Vanessa has reflected on her mistakes. She deeply regrets her actions."

"Jo, it was my misguided intentions. Your father has already reprimanded us."

Seeing that Jocelyn remained silent, Vanessa forced herself to remain calm and explained, "You are now Brian's fiancée, and with the support of your maternal family, the Romain family will take you seriously. If this matter blows up, it will surely affect the Hemsworth Group. You wouldn't want the Hemsworth Group to suffer, would you?"

Vanessa was well aware that the Hemsworth Group was a company her mother had built from the ground up, and she bet that Jocelyn would waver.

Seamus chimed in, "Family scandals should not be aired in public. Even if you don't consider Kelly and the others, you should think about the Hemsworth Group. Do you want to see the Hemsworth Group face bankruptcy because of this scandal?"

He held up two fingers. "I'll double your dowry. Surely that's enough."

He believed he was being more than generous. If it weren't for the opportunity to connect with the Romain, he would never have allowed his wife and daughter to be mistaken for the wrong person.

A mere twenty million to settle this?

Seamus was too naive; it was a shame the Hemsworth Group ended up in his hands.

In the distance, the sound of police sirens drew closer. Jocelyn raised an eyebrow and coldly said, "You'd better explain this to the police!"

She had only entertained them for this long to enjoy the show.

After rescuing her adoptive parents, she had asked her adoptive father to report the incident to the authorities.

By now, the police had gathered enough evidence of Vanessa's crimes.

Vanessa's face contorted in anger; she hadn't expected this little wench to call the police. The officers approached them directly. "Are you Ms. Vanessa Murray? We received a report; you are suspected of involvement in a kidnapping case. Please come with us."

Vanessa tried to deny it, but the police ignored her explanations and took her away. As she was led away, she shouted to Seamus, "Honey, save me!"

Kelly, initially stunned by the arrival of the police, finally reacted after her mother was taken away.

She screamed furiously, "Jocelyn, you little bitch, how dare you call the police! I'll kill you!"
