The moment Nico’s bare foot touched the fire, my heart slammed into my ribs so hard it almost cracked something open inside me.

“No!” I screamed, lunging forward.

Lucien caught me, holding me back with trembling arms.

“Adeline, wait—”

But I fought him. “He’s just a boy! He’s our son!”

I could barely see through my tears, but through the veil of flame, Nico didn’t scream.

He didn’t burn.

He walked—slow, sure steps across the fire, the white heat bending around him, parting like a veil made for him alone.

And then he was gone.

Swallowed by the ring of flame.
