By the time I left Cassandra’s apartment, it was already late, and I couldn’t return to the pack, so I drove with no destination in mind.

I ended up pulling into the first decent-looking hotel I saw. It felt like the kind of place people stay when they don’t want to think too much.

I parked and turned off the engine.

I remained seated with the seat belt draped over my chest and my hands still on the steering wheel for over five minutes.

The silence inside the car felt louder than any noise, like if I opened the door, everything I’d been holding in would come rushing...
