The words didn’t just land, they lingered. Even whole seconds after he had said it. Once upon a time, I had always smiled whenever I heard those words.
Now, a shiver ran down my spine and my frown deepened.
For a moment, I said absolutely nothing. Not because I didn’t have a response, I had several, but because no response I could give would conceal the hurt I felt deep within me.
