“Alaric,” I called, my voice barely above a whisper.

He leaned in. “What is it?” he asked.

I pulled him closer, resting my head against his chest. I didn’t know what came over me. For no clear reason, I felt comfort in his embrace, dangerous, unwanted comfort.

Silence. His hand stroked my back gently. He didn’t pull away. He didn’t tighten his grip either. His touch was light, almost hesitant, as if he were afraid I would disappear if he held me too firmly.

When I opened my eyes, he was gone.

I sat up on the bed, pulling my knees to my chest. The room felt empty...
