Mom returned to the hospital, her steps heavy and disoriented. She bumped into someone in the hallway.
“It’s you. Your daughter didn’t come to see you today?”
Mom looked up, surprised. The stranger continued, “You might not remember me, but I remember you and your daughter. Three months ago, when you were undergoing surgery, I saw your daughter constantly by your side. No matter where you went or what you did, she was always there, anxious and attentive. I was envious. Your daughter was truly a caring presence.”
Mom responded coldly, “She’s dead.”
Without another word, Mom walked away. The stranger was about to say something more when someone nearby...
