“Tell me what you want, Adele. Say it. Because I can’t keep guessing anymore.”
Leo stands in the doorway of a crumbling guest villa, surveying the cracked tiles which look like they’re trying to pull her under. It smells like pills, perfume, and old tears. Adele is sitting cross-legged on the floor, wild-eyed and barefoot. Her hands are trembling even though the room isn’t cold.
She looks up at him like he’s betrayed her. Again.
“You came here to mock me,” she whispers. Her voice is dry. Cracked. Her lips are chapped, and her mascara is smudged like she’s been crying or hasn’t slept in days.
