'I thought they were in a committed relationship?'

'The young man's heart will undoubtedly be broken.'

'I can't imagine my heart being broken like this.'

The audience was whispering, and I knew it was startling to them that I had refused Arthur. A man can only propose to a woman if he is certain she loves him and is willing to be his wife.
