The graduation ceremony was held in the assembly hall of the KIID college. The huge room was decorated with pomp: here and there were arrangements of balloons and flowers, a poster “Congratulations” hung above the stage. Graduates, teachers, faculty members and guests gathered in the hall. Each lucky graduate, to general applause, stood up in turn and went on stage for a coveted book. The vice-rector shook hands with everyone with an air of importance, poured out well-known quotations and admonished the new generation.

The graduate sat next to her husband in the second row from the stage and caught every word of the vice-rector.
