The words tore out of Zyran’s throat like a dangerous growl.

The whole world seemed to stand still. My heart crashed against my ribs.

"Your daughter?" Lorna shouted from Mateo’s shoulders. She tilted her head, looking around the crowded zoo. "Is your little girl here, Mr. Zyran? Where is she?"

Mateo frowned, his eyes narrowing at Zyran.

Panic drove me to act faster than I ever had. I stepped between the two tall men, completely blocking Zyran’s view of Mateo.
