Clarissa took a long sip of wine, eyes drifting to where Dean and Sofia chased each other in the garden. The late afternoon sun dipped behind the trees, casting a golden lights over everything.

“They look like siblings,” she said quietly.

“They might as well be,” Tessa replied, her voice distant. “They’ve only known each other over video calls, yet they act like they’ve grown up together.”

“They’ll need each other in the coming days,” Clarissa added.

Tessa placed her glass down on the table. “Tomorrow changes everything.”
